Susan van Dyk - The climate impact of aviation and the role of sustainable aviation fuels - Session 3, Tuesday 10:30 am

Susan van Dyk is an expert in the field of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and biofuels with 15 years of experience. As a consultant, she helps companies, governments and international organisations to develop and implement sustainable biofuel solutions. Susan’s expertise includes an in-depth understanding of the technologies for SAF production, their potential and challenges, and research and commercialisation trends. She is also experienced in feedstocks and pretreatment processes, co-processing of biobased feedstocks in petroleum refineries, refinery integration, policy, and sustainability.

She is the author and co-author of numerous influential reports focusing on the application of biofuels and SAF in transportation sectors. These reports were commissioned by organisations such as the International Energy Agency Bioenergy Task 39, the International Renewable Energy Agency, Natural Resources Canada, and Transport Canada. She has also published many highly-cited academic papers. She has worked on several SAF projects funded by Boeing, Suncor, Noram Engineering, the Parkland refinery and other companies, and she acts as a reviewer for the US Department of Energy.

Susan holds a Doctorate in Biochemistry and a Master's degree in law. She works as a consultant and is also a Research Associate at the University of British Columbia.

Conrad Hatcher - Pilot Training in the 21st Century - Session 4, Tuesday 10:30 am

Pilot Training in the 21st Century - Conrad Hatcher is a lifelong aviation enthusiast who has maintained a passion for all things aeronautical since his first flying lesson in 1975. He has had the great fortune and privilege to enjoy aviation as both a recreational pursuit and a satisfying career and has worked as a flight instructor, Transport Canada inspector, airline and corporate pilot, and airport manager on the way to accumulating over 20,000 flight hours. During those many hours in the air he has had the opportunity to fly all over North America, the Caribbean and to Europe in various aircraft providing an opportunity to acquire a wealth of knowledge to share with new pilots. He is happy to share this information with anyone who wants to listen and enjoys the opportunity to speak to groups of pilots, aviation enthusiasts and industry groups. For the last several years he has been able to expand his audience as the co-founder of the popular online groundschool platform Hangaaar.com. When not actually flying, thinking about flying or talking about flying Conrad enjoys spending quality time with his family including an increasing number of rescue dogs that seem to appear regularly around his house.

Benjamin McCarthy - FDT Limits and FRMS: A Performance Based Approach to Compliance With the New CARs - Session 7, Tuesday 2 pm

New restrictions on flight and duty times took effect just over a year ago for Part 703/704 operators. The CARs provide for a performance-based approach to compliance by implementing a Fatigue Risk Management System and developing a Safety Case. This presentation will discuss how an FRMS works and provide an overview of the Safety Case process. We will share insights from Pulsar's extensive experience working with Canadian air operators and Transport Canada over the past 5 years. 

Ben McCarthy is a data scientist with Pulsar Informatics. Since joining Pulsar, he has worked extensively with Air Canada and several Canadian helicopter operators performing data collection and analysis to support the development of Notices of Intent and Safety Cases in accordance with the new Canadian Aviation Regulations. Together with his colleagues at Pulsar, he has led the development of a robust statistical approach to benchmarking flight and duty time data sets. Ben holds a Master's Degree in Science and lives in Traverse City, Michigan with his wife and a loud dog.

William (Bill) Strom - Transport Canada Update - Session 1, Tuesday 9 am

I started flying in 1990, in Saskatoon. I worked as a ramp attendant for West Wind while finishing my training. My first flying job was in Northern Saskatchewan living in several different fly in only communities flying a C172, a Beech Baron and Piper Navajo. I moved to Manitoba in 1998 to fly for a corporate operator. That position took me all over North America, from the high arctic to some of the busiest airports in North America. When that job ended I spent a summer contract flying forest fire patrols for a company based in Flin Flon. After that I worked for a Manitoba based air ambulance operation for nearly 9 years, flying out of Winnipeg, Churchill, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit. I flew as a line pilot, training pilot and the chief pilot. I then moved to the Manitoba Government for several years flying the Twin Otter, out of Thompson and Winnipeg. Leaving MGAS for Transport in 2015.


At Transport I have worked with operators from float and spray operators to CAR 705 airlines, from small grass strips to the high arctic. Being the first contact that certificate holders have with TC can be rewarding and educational for both sides. During my career I have been involved in training and safety, creating and teaching ground schools, becoming a CRM/Human Factors facilitator. Outside of aviation I recently started restoring a classic car.
